About Mercado Municipal de Soure

The Mercado Municipal de Soure is the shopping and meeting place of the largest town on Marajó Island. It is downtown, facing a tree-lined square with tables in the shade of mango trees.

Inside, the central aisle has stalls with regional fruit, vegetables, juices, sausages and Marajó food products, as well as crafts such as leather sandals and pottery. The fish comes in from the rivers and is cleaned right there by the fishermen.

The most traditional thing to do is have breakfast at the market, alongside locals and tourists, trying the pão caseirinho with Marajó cheese, made from buffalo milk. The menu is simple and homemade.

It is a short, flat outing, easy for all ages, and a good place to buy directly from the producers and take home souvenirs of the island.
