About Fazenda São Jerônimo

Fazenda São Jerônimo is a water buffalo farm in Soure, on Marajó Island, that welcomes visitors for ecotourism outings. It is one of the most popular things to do in Soure, because it brings together in a few hours the island's most typical features: buffalo, forest, mangroves, igarapé and beach.

The water buffalo is a symbol of Marajó, present in farm work and in the island's food, such as buffalo-milk cheese. At the farm, you see up close how these animals are part of daily life in the countryside. The property has also been a setting for news reports, soap operas and TV shows.

The tour is guided. Part of the way is done riding a buffalo, along trails through the forest. There are raised wooden boardwalks over the mangroves and an almost deserted river beach, Praia do Goiabal. The return can be by canoe or boat along the igarapé. On some versions of the tour you can get into the water with the buffalo.

It is an outing for nature lovers who do not mind mud, sun and heat. It requires the stamina to walk and to ride a buffalo. It is not recommended for people with limited mobility.
