Foz do Iguaçu is 640 km from Curitiba, about eight hours by car on the BR-277. Buses from Curitiba arrive at the International Bus Terminal, on a trip of about 11 hours. Most visitors arrive by plane: Foz do Iguaçu International Airport is about 13 km from downtown, on the way to the Falls.

How many days

Three days: one for the Brazilian side of the Falls and the Parque das Aves, which are across from each other; one for the Argentine side; and one for Itaipu and the Marco das Três Fronteiras. With four, you have time for the beaches of Lago de Itaipu.

When to go

From March to May and from September to November, it is less hot. Summer is hot and humid, with the falls at their fullest. July is the coldest month, with chilly mornings. Rain is spread throughout the year, with October the rainiest. The Falls are open every day.

Do you need a car?

No. There are city buses from downtown to the Falls and the Parque das Aves, plus taxis, ride-hailing apps and agencies that go to Itaipu and the Argentine side. A car helps for the beaches of Lago de Itaipu, in the neighboring towns.

    Arrive at opening time. The trail along the canyon edge ends at the Garganta do Diabo walkway.

    Parque das Aves

    About 500 meters from the national park entrance. A 1.5 km trail among aviaries in the forest.

  3. Late afternoon
    Marco das Três Fronteiras

    Sunset where the rivers meet, with Argentina and Paraguay on the other side. Closed on Mondays.

2 days in Foz do Iguaçu

Day 1

    Iguazu Falls (Brazilian side)

    The same start, when the park opens.

    Parque das Aves

    Across from the national park, after lunch.

    Marco das Três Fronteiras

    Sunset over the rivers. Closed on Mondays.

Day 2

    Itaipu Hydroelectric Dam

    Book the tour in advance. The most complete one, Itaipu Especial, has a minimum age of 14.

  2. Afternoon
    Templo Budista Chen Tien (Buddhist temple)

    The Buddha statue and more than a hundred sculptures in the garden. An hour is enough.

  3. Late afternoon
    Dreams Park Show

    Wax museum and other indoor attractions. Good with kids or on a rainy day.

Do I need to buy Iguazu Falls tickets in advance?

It is recommended. Tickets are sold online, for a set date and time. The park is open every day, including Mondays.

Can I do the Falls and the Parque das Aves on the same day?

Yes. The Parque das Aves is about 500 meters from the national park entrance. Do the Falls in the morning and the birds in the afternoon.

Can children go on the Itaipu tour?

On the panoramic tour, yes. Itaipu Especial, which goes inside the plant, has a minimum age of 14 and requires a photo ID and closed-toe shoes.

When is the dam lit up?

Itaipu Iluminada takes place on Friday and Saturday nights. In high season, buy in advance.

Is the Marco das Três Fronteiras open on Mondays?

No. It is open Tuesday to Sunday, from afternoon into the evening.
