Wagner developed around the Instituto Ponte Nova, founded by Presbyterian missionaries, along the Rio Utinga. The history of education and health shaped the settlement in the Chapada. The town is part of the northern branch of the Circuito do Diamante, accessible via the BA-142 corridor from the BR-242.
