Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
Bonito is about 300 km from Campo Grande, three to four hours by car, depending on the road. Cruzeiro do Sul runs buses from the Campo Grande bus station, and there are transfers and vans. Bonito Airport, 13 km from downtown, has scheduled flights from São Paulo; the other option is Campo Grande International Airport.
How many days
Four to five days. Each tour takes half a day or a full day, and many are in Jardim and Bodoquena. With three days, choose one cave, one float and one river swim.
When to go
From May to September, in the dry season, the water is usually clearest. From December to March it is hotter, and rain can cloud the rivers for a few days. Between December and February, sunlight reaches the lake in the Gruta do Lago Azul. The Winter Festival takes place between July and August.
Do you need a car?
It is not required. Agencies sell tours with transportation to the ranches, and you can explore downtown on foot. A car gives you flexibility with times, but several roads are dirt and get bad in the rain.

Frequently asked questions
Can you buy tickets at the gate of the Balneário Municipal?
No. Tourists need a voucher bought from an agency in town. There is a daily visitor limit, and when it fills up the gate closes.
What is the Bonito environmental fee?
It is a daily environmental conservation fee, mandatory for tourists since December 2025, paid on the official Turista por Natureza website. Young children and residents are exempt.
How many tours can I do per day?
Usually one long tour or two short ones. The ranches are up to an hour and a half's drive away, and the time of each tour is set on the voucher.
Does the Abismo Anhumas require training?
Yes. The day before, everyone does a rappel training session at the attraction's office in downtown Bonito. Spots are few: book in advance.
