About Trem das Águas
The Trem das Águas is a steam train ride between São Lourenço and neighboring Soledade de Minas, in southern Minas Gerais. The train leaves from the railway station in downtown São Lourenço and covers about 10 kilometers of an old railway to Soledade, with a stop before the return.
The stretch is part of the Minas & Rio railway, opened in the late 19th century. Today the ride is run by the Brazilian Railway Preservation Association (ABPF), which maintains steam locomotives and original wooden cars from Brazilian railways.
The trip is relaxed, without dramatic scenery: the train moves slowly through forests, bamboo groves and stretches of countryside, puffing smoke and whistling along the way. There are two classes, one with wooden benches and another with upholstered seats. Musicians often entertain passengers during the ride.
In Soledade de Minas, the stop lets you get off, see the locomotive up close and take photos at the station. The ride especially appeals to families with children and anyone who loves old trains.
