About Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição is the main Catholic church in Resende and stands on Praça Oliveira Botelho, in the historic center. It is dedicated to the town's patron saint and is protected by the Resende town government for its historical, cultural and religious importance.

Construction began in 1812, funded by contributions from residents. In 1831, the Blessed Sacrament and the statues were moved from the old church to the new one. On August 22, 1945, a major fire destroyed almost the entire building, and only the two towers were left standing.

The community rallied to rebuild the church in its original form, using the towers that survived. The church was consecrated again on August 21, 1954.

The visit is quick and pairs well with a walk around the square and the streets of the historic center. The main entrance is at the top of a flight of steps, which can be an obstacle for people with limited mobility.
