About Lago Azul
Lago Azul is a natural pool on the Rio Campo Belo (river), in the lower part of the Parque Nacional do Itatiaia, Brazil's first national park, created in 1937. Despite the name, it is not a lake: it is a backwater of clear water among rounded rocks, surrounded by Atlantic Forest.
It is about 500 meters from the Visitor Center, along a short, easy path. That is exactly why it is one of the most popular attractions in the lower part of the park: you can get there effortlessly and spend time by the water.
The pool is shallow in many places and good for swimming, so it attracts many families with children. An old bridge crosses the river just above the water and is the best-known image of the place. There are kiosks nearby for visitors.
Besides the main access, there is a second path, longer and without steps, designed for older visitors and people with limited mobility. The water is cold all year, as in almost every mountain river in the region.
