About Parque Estadual de Campos do Jordão (Horto Florestal)
The Parque Estadual de Campos do Jordão, known to everyone as the Horto Florestal, is the largest green area in town and the main gateway to the nature of the Serra da Mantiqueira. It takes up a large part of the municipality, along the border with Minas Gerais.
The park was created in 1941. In its early decades, part of the area was reforested with exotic pines, which still mark the landscape near the entrance. The rest protects high-altitude Atlantic Forest: araucaria and podocarpus forests, high-altitude grasslands and cloud forest.
The visitor area is along the Rio Sapucaí (river), with lakes, lawns, barbecue grills and picnic space. Self-guided trails start from there, most of them easy and flat, such as the one along the river and the one to the Cachoeira da Galharada (waterfall). The Trilha dos Campos has climbs and takes a bit more stamina. There are also adventure activities paid separately, such as a zip line and a treetop course.
It is a good outing for families with children and for anyone who likes walking without much effort. Monkeys and many birds often appear near the trails and the leisure area.
