About Cânion Espraiado
Cânion Espraiado (canyon) is in the southern part of Campo dos Padres, at almost 1,500 meters of altitude, in one of the coldest regions of Brazil. It is one of the most impressive landscapes in Urubici: sheer rock walls dropping from the edge of the plateau toward the Santa Catarina coast.
Up top, the terrain is open grassland, marshes and small streams. Trails lead to several viewpoints on the canyon rim, to rock formations such as Torre dos Anjos and to Cachoeira do Adão (waterfall), which has natural pools. Nearby is Montanha Infinita, with a swing facing the valley.
The canyon is on private property, and you need permission to enter. There is an entrance fee. Getting there is the challenge: the final road can only be tackled by 4x4, or on foot, on a long climb that takes several hours.
The outing is for people who like adventure and are in good shape. Many prefer to go by 4x4 with a local guide or agency. There is a camping area if you want to spend the night up top and watch the sunrise on the canyon rim.

Practical information
How much time to set aside
A full day, counting the drive up and at least three hours to explore the trails and viewpoints at the top.
Best time
On clear days, ideally setting out early in the morning, because fog is common and can cover the view; in winter the cold at the top is intense.
How to get there
It is about 35 km from downtown Urubici. Take the SC-439 toward the Serra do Corvo Branco, then a dirt road. The last stretch requires a 4x4 with an experienced driver, or a hike; the easiest option is a 4x4 tour with a local guide.
Tip
Bring waterproof boots or rent rubber boots on site, extra socks and a windbreaker: the top of the canyon has marshes and is very windy.
