About Parque Jonas Ramos
Parque Jonas Ramos, which locals call the Tanque, is the main green space in downtown Lages, in the Serra Catarinense. In the middle is a long pond, surrounded by lawns, trees and a waterside path.
The nickname comes from the past. The pond is fed by nearby natural springs, and the town's washerwomen used to wash clothes there. Tradition links the tank to the early days of the village, founded in 1766 by Antônio Correia Pinto. The Monumento às Lavadeiras (monument), inside the park, honors these women.
The Tanque also has its legend. According to the book Tradições Lendárias e Místicas de Lages, a baby abandoned in the tank turned into a giant serpent, held back by Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres, the city's patron saint. It is known as the legend of the Serpente do Tanque (Serpent of the Tank).
The outing is simple: walk or jog around the pond, look for the red carp in the water, see the fountain, sit on the grass or have a picnic. There is a playground and a sports court, and locals use the place a lot for walks.
The path around the pond is flat, which makes the visit easy for families with small children and older people.
