About Morro da Cruz
Morro da Cruz (hill) is the best-known viewpoint in Lages. It is in the Morro Grande neighborhood, about 3 km from downtown, more than 1,000 meters above sea level, among the highest points in the city. From up there the view takes in much of Lages and the surrounding hills of the Serra Catarinense.
At the top are the large cross that gives the hill its name, a chapel and the Memorial Frei Silvério, which honors the friar linked to the site's religious tradition. On foot, you go up the Escadaria Frei Silvério Weber, a stairway with 513 steps, but you can also drive up a road to the top.
The hill is a place of faith. On Good Friday, thousands of the faithful climb the stairs from before dawn, many on their knees, praying the Stations of the Cross, and there are reenactments of the Passion of Christ near the cross. The rest of the year, the place draws people who want to see the city from above and watch the sunset, as well as hang gliders and paragliders.
Climbing the stairs takes good stamina and rested legs; if you have reduced mobility or small children, it is best to drive.
