About Cânion do Papuã

Cânion do Papuã (canyon) is a rock gorge about 20 meters high, carved by a river in the Papuã area, in the countryside of Bom Retiro, in the Serra Catarinense. It is on private property, and visits are by appointment only.

There are three waterfalls in the canyon. The first is Portal das Bromélias, a small one about 3 meters high. The best known is Cachoeira Papuã, about 10 meters high, which runs down the canyon walls into a clear pool that is good for swimming. The third, Poço Verde, is the largest and lies farther on, with more restricted access.

The trail to the first falls is short but calls for care. It is marked, crosses stretches of water and slippery rock, and has a steep descent between rock walls, done with the help of ropes.

The outing suits people who like adventure and have some fitness. It is not recommended for people with limited mobility.
