About Cânion da Ronda

Cânion da Ronda (canyon) is at the top of the Serra do Rio do Rastro, in Bom Jardim da Serra. Its rim is on the plateau of the town's wind farm, and the turbines are part of the landscape as you arrive. It is considered the easiest canyon to reach in the region.

The name dates back to the days of the tropeiros (cattle drovers). This is where they made their rounds (ronda) at night to watch over the cattle. The upper rim belongs to Bom Jardim da Serra; the inside of the canyon is already in Lauro Müller.

From the top, the view opens onto the rock walls, the forested valleys and ridge after ridge of mountains. There is more than one natural viewpoint along the rim.

The outing is easy: the path to the rim is short, almost all on a wooden boardwalk. It suits families and people who are not up for long hikes. Horseback rides are also offered in the area. At the cliff edge, keep an eye on children.

Practical information

How much time to set aside

One to two hours is enough to walk to the rim and enjoy the viewpoints.

Best time

On clear days, early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the low light brings out the cliffs; in winter it is very cold and fog can block the view.

How to get there

It is in Bom Jardim da Serra, near the top of the Serra do Rio do Rastro, next to the SC-390 highway. The entrances are through Mirante Serra Parque and Camping da Ronda; from there you walk to the rim on a trail of about 350 meters, almost all on a wooden boardwalk.

Tip

Bring a windbreaker even in summer: at the top of the mountains the wind is strong and the temperature drops fast when the fog rolls in.
