About Ruínas da Igreja Nossa Senhora de Belém
The ruins of the Igreja Nossa Senhora de Belém are located in the Jucu neighborhood in Viana. The temple was built in 1780 by Torquato Martins de Araújo and suffered a fire in 1880, when it was a century old. The remaining structure allows one to recognize part of the architecture of the former religious building.
The complex underwent restoration attempts in the 20th century and received state heritage listing in 1993. The visit is external in nature: observe the elements that remain standing and the monument's relationship with the surrounding area. It is not a museum with exhibition rooms nor a reconstructed temple intended to reproduce the original appearance.
Access is paved, with landscaping around the site. Walk through the areas prepared for the public and help preserve the structures; do not climb on the walls or move materials. To examine the details of the ruins and photograph the architecture, prefer daylight and set aside a dedicated visit in the Jucu neighborhood.
