About Museu das Missões
The Museu das Missões is located next to the Sítio Histórico São Miguel Arcanjo in São Miguel das Missões. Conceived from Lucio Costa's project, the museological complex houses mission-era sculptures in polychromed wood and links architecture with collection preservation. The visit adds to the observation of the ruins an understanding of the art produced in the Jesuit-Guarani reductions.
The pieces allow one to perceive different expressions and techniques, but they should be known through their identification and the context of the exhibition. The collection should not be reduced to mere landscape decoration: it preserves materials of historical and artistic value, with specific conservation care.
Check the operating conditions of the exhibition spaces before travel. Entry to the site does not automatically guarantee access to all areas of the museum. Indoors, follow photography rules, keep a distance from the sculptures and seek guidance from the staff to understand the collection.
