Get to know the place

A region to enjoy
at your own pace.

Natal gathers the memory of the colonial settlement at the mouth of the Rio Potengi and beaches open to the Atlantic. The Forte dos Reis Magos, tied to the city's origin, shows the historic side of the visit. The Cidade Alta adds churches and the old urban core to the route.

In the southern zone, Ponta Negra has the Morro do Careca as a landscape landmark. The Via Costeira links this stretch to the urban beaches. They are parts of the capital itself, which can be visited on different days depending on whether you prioritize the coast or exploring the city center.

The Parque das Dunas offers contact with the vegetation and the dune environment of the city. The Bosque dos Namorados is an alternative to include a green pause between beach outings and transfers along the historic circuit.

In Redinha, ginga com tapioca offers a flavor connected to the neighborhood's history. Fish and seafood are also part of Natal's cuisine. It's worth reserving a meal to get to know this tradition, and to enjoy the landscape where river meets sea.

For For those who want to explore the capital at a relaxed pace and include dives in natural pools · Based in Natal, in Ponta Negra or on the Via Costeira
  1. Day 1 · Arrival and Ponta Negra waterfront

Natal International Airport is in São Gonçalo do Amarante, outside the capital. Book transfer to the neighborhood before arriving. After settling in, walk along the Ponta Negra waterfront to the Morro do Careca in the late afternoon. If you have time left, the jangalancha ride in Ponta Negra is a short option, subject to sea conditions.

  2. Day 2 · Historic center and Rio Potengi

Morning at Forte dos Reis Magos, at the mouth of the Rio Potengi. Then walk through Cidade Alta and Ribeira, with churches and the old urban core. Those who prefer a guide can opt for the city tour in Natal. In the late afternoon, a catamaran or boat trip on the Rio Potengi showcases the sunset, with the meeting of river and sea.

  3. Day 3 · Buggy along the northern coast: Genipabu and Pitangui

Day for a buggy tour along the northern coast, with the Genipabu dunes and the Pitangui lagoon. Check what each operator includes and what is paid extra. On the way back, or before leaving, stop in Redinha in the north zone to try ginga with tapioca and the local fish.

  4. Day 4 · Cajueiro de Pirangi and natural pools

Visit the Cajueiro de Pirangi in Parnamirim, known for its very extensive canopy. Afterwards, take the boat trip with snorkeling in the natural pools of Pirangi. The snorkeling depends on the tide: check the tide table before booking the day and confirm with the operator. Bring sunscreen and swimwear.

  5. Day 5 · Parque das Dunas and Arena das Dunas

In the morning, take an interpretive trail in Parque das Dunas to learn about the vegetation and the dunes within the city. Check the park’s visiting days and rules. Best time to go

When to go: Natal month by month

November has little rain on average historically and is a good option for prioritizing the beaches. July tends to be rainier. To combine sea, the fort and parks, choose outdoor activities according to the forecast during your stay.

January Low rain

High season · Hot days

The historical average from INMET is about 80 mm for the month, with highs near 30 °C and lows near 24 °C. It's the school vacation period and there's increased activity at beaches, buggy rides and the Parrachos. Book tours in advance and check the tide for snorkeling. Short showers may occur but usually pass quickly.

February Some rain

Carnival · High season

It rains more than in January, but the sea and the dunes remain accessible most days. The high season runs until the end of Carnival, which changes date each year, and tours and attractions get crowded. Book buggy rides, boat trips and Parrachos in advance and save outdoor activities for days with good weather.

March High rain

Start of the rains · Mixed days

This is when the rainiest season begins, with more rainy days than in previous months. Many days still have sun, but it's good to have an alternative plan, such as the historic center, the fort and the Arena Tour. Holy Week, when it falls in the month, increases activity. Check the forecast before booking boat trips and diving.

April High rain

Frequent rain · Fewer visitors

Rain is frequent and usually comes in heavy downpours. Boat trips, diving and buggy rides can be rescheduled by the operator depending on the weather and the sea. Activity levels tend to be lower, except during the Easter holiday. Prefer flexible activities, such as exploring the historic center on foot, and leave long excursions for days with no forecast of heavy rain.

May High rain

Peak rainfall · Variable sea

During the rainiest months: INMET's historical average is about 220 mm. Cloudy days are common and visibility at the parrachos can drop. There are fewer tourists, and the schedule of tours depends on the forecast. In the capital, the fort, the historic center and the Arena Tour serve as alternatives on rainy days.

June High rain

Rainy period · Less activity

The rainy period continues, with rain on many days. Temperatures begin to fall: lows are around 24 °C. Visitor numbers are lower than in high season. Favor excursions that can be rescheduled and confirm with the operator, the day before, the sea and tide conditions.

July High rain

Heavy rain · School holidays

July is the month with the highest average rainfall in INMET's series, about 254 mm, and it varies a lot from year to year. Lows stay around 23 °C, among the lowest of the year. School holidays increase visitor numbers. Combine beach time with covered or short activities and choose sea excursions according to the forecast.

August Some rain

End of the rainy period · Mild temperatures

Rain decreases compared with July, with INMET's historical average near 119 mm. Temperatures remain among the lowest of the year. The dry season usually becomes established from the second half of the month. It's a period of moderate activity, good for combining buggy rides, the seafront and parrachos, always checking the forecast and the tide.

September Low rain

Start of the dry season · Moderate crowds

INMET's historical average is about 54 mm. The weather is more stable, although there can still be unstable days. Activity is usually lower than in summer and temperatures begin to rise again. It's a good month for buggy rides on the north and south coasts, natural pools and trails in Parque das Dunas. Check the tide at the parrachos.

October Low rain

Little rain · Beaches and tours

The historical average from INMET is about 21 mm, the lowest of the year. There is little rain and sea trips, buggy rides and dunes follow the normal schedule. Visitor numbers are lower than in high season. Keep checking the tide table for Maracajaú, Pirangi and Perobas, because visibility depends on the tide.

November Low rain

Little rain · Before the high season

There is little rain, with few rainy days in the month. Temperatures rise again, with lows near 25 °C. It's a good option to prioritize the beaches, the dunes and the Parrachos. Visitor numbers tend to increase near the year-end holidays. Book boat trips and buggy rides with some advance notice.

December Low rain

Start of high season · Heat

The historical average from INMET is about 29 mm, with few rainy days. Days are hot and the high season begins, running until the end of Carnival. Activity increases at beaches, buggy rides and the Parrachos, especially during school holidays and year-end festivities. Book transfers and tours in advance.

Check what the package includes, such as checked baggage, boarding fees and tours.

On your own: you buy the ticket, choose the neighborhood and plan the itinerary. Book the transfer in advance (private or shared) or decide between taxi, ride-hailing app and bus. It gives more freedom of dates and excursions, but requires more planning. Those who want to visit Pipa or the northern coast can combine agency trips with the capital.

Prices vary by origin, date and hotel. Compare current offers at agencies and on booking platforms.

Practical information

A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.

When to go

November has little rain on average historically and is a good option for prioritizing the beaches. July tends to be rainier. To combine sea, the fort and parks, choose outdoor activities according to the forecast during your stay.

How many days to stay

Stay three days: the first in Ponta Negra; the second at the Forte dos Reis Magos and the historic circuit of the Cidade Alta; the third in the Parque das Dunas and Redinha, with a meal of ginga com tapioca. For more beach time, add a fourth day.

Which city to stay in

Ponta Negra is a base for those who want to concentrate lodging, beach and meals in the same neighborhood. The Via Costeira favors a stay focused on the coast, with transfers to other areas. Those who prioritize heritage should set aside part of their visit for the Cidade Alta, even if staying in the southern zone.

Respect the place

Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.

Because operating rules may change, confirm days and opening times with administration before you go.

Does the trip to the Parrachos de Maracajaú depend on the tide? What is the best time of year?

It depends. The natural pools only exist at low tide. They appear 30 to 45 minutes later each day, and the tour time changes accordingly. The departure can be very early, depending on the day's tide table. A travel guide recommends doing the trip with a low tide no greater than 0.5. Low tides are more frequent at full moon and new moon. According to an operator, October to March have a predominance of sunny days. Maracajaú is about 60 km from Natal, in Maxaranguape, and the trip from Natal lasts approximately 8 hours. Choose the date by checking the tide table and book before you travel.
