About Comunidade Indígena Kauwê
The Kauwê Indigenous Community is a village of the Macuxi and Taurepang peoples in the Alto Miang region, inside the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Territory, in the municipality of Pacaraima, near the border with Venezuela. It is a young community, formed by families who returned to the territory after the Indigenous land was officially recognized in 2008.
Tourism is organized by the community itself, through Kauwê Turismo, considered the first Indigenous tourism agency in Roraima. Visits only happen with a booking through the agency: entry to the Indigenous territory is not open, which helps preserve the place and the local way of life.
The best-known itinerary is the Rota do Café Artesanal. The community grows arabica coffee in agroforestry systems, mixed with other plants, and the harvest is done by hand, bean by bean. One of the coffees produced there is called Imeru, the Macuxi word for waterfall.
Besides the coffee plantation, the tour includes trails, a waterfall swim, Indigenous food and conversations about local culture. It is a trip for travelers interested in community-based tourism and nature, with easy to moderate walks and a long road journey from Boa Vista.
