About Lago Caracaranã
Lago Caracaranã is in Normandia, in northeastern Roraima, inside the Raposa Serra do Sol Indigenous Territory. It is a lake of clear, warm water, with fine white-sand beaches, surrounded by cashew trees, in the middle of the lavrado, the open grassland typical of the north of the state.
Before the area was demarcated as Indigenous land, the lake operated as a resort with chalets and a restaurant. It is considered sacred by Indigenous peoples of the region. After discussions between the communities and the Conselho Indígena de Roraima (CIR), the leaders decided to keep the lake open to tourism, and today the facilities are managed by the Indigenous community itself.
The plan is to swim, relax on the sand and stroll along the lakeshore. You can spend the day or stay overnight: the community offers chalets and space for tents and hammocks. Around the lake you can see egrets, storks and hawks, among other lavrado wildlife.
Since it is on Indigenous land, visits follow the community's rules. There is an admission fee, including for day use. Glass, loud music and fires near the vegetation are not allowed, and visitors must pick up their own trash. The lake is peaceful and popular with families.
