About Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Carmo
The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Carmo is the oldest church in Boa Vista and one of the landmarks of the historic center of Roraima's capital. It is a few steps from the Orla Taumanan, near the Rio Branco, where the city was born.
The parish was created in 1892. Benedictine monks arrived in the region in 1909 and built a new church, with work continuing until the early 1920s. They gave the church touches of Germanic architecture, inspired by Bavarian churches, something rare in the Amazon.
The church is recognized as a historic heritage site of Boa Vista and was restored in the 2000s to recover its original features. Our Lady of Mount Carmel (Nossa Senhora do Carmo) is the patron saint of the city and the Diocese of Roraima.
The visit is quick and relaxed: you can admire the facade, go into the nave and then walk to the riverfront. Access is at street level. Since it is an active church, respect Mass times.

Practical information
How much time to set aside
Half an hour is enough to see the church inside and out; with the riverfront next door, allow a morning or a late afternoon.
Best time
Early in the morning or late afternoon, when the Boa Vista heat lets up and the low light flatters the facade. In July, the patron saint's festival brings the church to life.
How to get there
It is on Rua Bento Brasil, in downtown Boa Vista, about 200 meters from the Orla Taumanan and next to the city bus terminal. You can walk from downtown; by car or ride-hailing app, it is a short ride from almost any neighborhood.
Tip
Combine the visit with a stroll along the Orla Taumanan, right next door, and arrive in the late afternoon to watch the sunset over the Rio Branco.
