About Cachoeira da Pedra Furada
Cachoeira da Pedra Furada is in Presidente Figueiredo, in the state of Amazonas, at km 57 of the AM-240 highway, the road to Balbina. It is the farthest of the area's most popular waterfalls and usually gets few visitors.
The name comes from the holes in the stone slab at the top of the falls. Part of the water runs through these holes and forms natural showers. Below, the water settles into a half-moon-shaped natural pool, surrounded by a rock wall and dense forest.
The site is one of the geosites of the Geoparque Cachoeiras do Amazonas, described by the Geological Survey of Brazil. The rock wall shows layers of sedimentary rock laid down in an ancient marine environment. At the top, the sandstone layer has cavities that, over time, become the holes the water flows through.
The waterfall is on private land and has no tourist facilities, such as a restaurant or snack bar. The walk to the falls is short and goes through the forest. It is an outing for anyone who wants a quiet swim and contact with the forest, away from the crowds.
