About Parque Ecológico do Janauari

The Parque Ecológico do Janauari protects an area of lakes, igarapés and flooded forest in Iranduba, on the bank of the Solimões River, near the Encontro das Águas (Meeting of the Waters) with the Rio Negro. It lies right across from Manaus and is part of the Encontro das Águas Environmental Protection Area.

Tourism at Lago Janauari began in the late 1960s, and today it is one of the most common stops on half-day boat trips from Manaus. Many itineraries combine the visit with the Encontro das Águas, where the two rivers run side by side without mixing.

The highlight is a lake covered with giant water lilies, the aquatic plant that symbolizes the Amazon, which you view from wooden walkways. There are also trails and canoe rides through the igapós, the forest that stands in water during the flood season, with a chance to see monkeys and many birds.

It is an easy outing, good for families and for anyone with little time in Manaus. The nature is less wild than in more remote reserves, but it gives a good first idea of the flooded forest.
