About Centro Cultural São Francisco

Centro Cultural São Francisco is the main Baroque complex in João Pessoa and sits in the city's historic center. It brings together the Igreja de São Francisco (church), the Convento de Santo Antônio (convent), the Capela Dourada (Golden Chapel) of the Third Order, cloisters, a fountain from 1717 and a large churchyard with a stone cross. The complex was listed by Iphan (Brazil's national heritage institute) in 1952.

Franciscan friars began building it in 1589. The convent was seized during the Dutch occupation and later recovered, and most of what you see today was built over the 18th century, in limestone quarried from the site itself. The church facade has an arched porch at its base, a stepped frontispiece with leaf ornaments and a tower topped with a bulbous crown.

The visit starts in the churchyard, with the single-stone cross in front of the church. Inside, highlights include the gilded carvings of the high altar and pulpit, the painted ceilings, the choir, the sacristy, the cloister surrounded by galleries and the Capela Dourada, covered entirely in gold. The convent also houses a museum of sacred art and folk art, with permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Visits are led by the cultural center's guides, with tours throughout the day, and there is an entrance fee. It is a relaxed outing, with an easy walk through rooms and galleries, good for anyone who enjoys history, architecture and religious art.
