- Betânia A community inside the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses, crossed by the Rio Alegre, with dark water at a pleasant temperature for swimming. It's the support base for the Betânia, Pedra and Cajueirinho lagoons, reached in licensed vehicles.
- Lagoa da Andorinha Close to town, it can be reached on foot or by vehicle and is part of the most popular circuit in the area. The route also includes Lagoa do Maçarico, among the dunes of the Parque Nacional dos Lençóis Maranhenses.
- Lagoa das Emendadas A set of interconnected lagoons that can only be reached by walking across the dunes. It's the option if you want to feel the scale of the park away from the bigger groups.
When to go
From June to August, when the lagoons are full; in very rainy years, the water lasts until October. The rains run from January to May. July is the busiest month in the region.
How many days to stay
Two days: one for Betânia and another for Lagoa das Emendadas, with Lagoa da Andorinha in the late afternoon. It's the base if you want big lagoons with fewer people than in Barreirinhas.
