Get to know the place
João Pessoa was founded on the banks of the Rio Sanhauá in 1585. The historic center preserves a route between the upper part of the city and the Varadouro. The Centro Cultural São Francisco, the Casa da Pólvora and the Catedral de Nossa Senhora das Neves feature architecture, art and different moments of the local history.
Along the waterfront, Tambaú and Cabo Branco allow you to dedicate part of the trip to the beach without leaving the municipality. The Farol do Cabo Branco and the Estação Cabo Branco complete the circuit in this area. Praia do Seixas offers another stretch of the capital's coastline.
The Tambaú area concentrates the feirinha and the Mercado de Artesanato Paraibano. It's a stop to observe the craft production and combine a walk along the waterfront with a visit off the sand.
Rubacão, tapioca and cuscuz with carne de sol bring the meal closer to Paraíba flavors. To balance heritage and sea, keep one day for the historic center separate from the beach days.
This destination brings together 1 city: João Pessoa.

Discover Ponta do Seixas e Farol do Cabo Branco
The reefs, about 15 minutes by boat from the Tambaú waterfront, form clear-water pools with colorful fish. They are only accessible at low tide, especially in the weeks of the new and full moon.
Discover Piscinas Naturais de Picãozinho
Designed by Oscar Niemeyer and opened in July 2008, the complex offers free exhibitions and activities in art, science and technology. It has become one of the city's architectural symbols.
Discover Estação Cabo Branco – Ciência, Cultura e Artes
The former Lagoa dos Irerês became a public park around 1922 and got gardens by Burle Marx, with a ring of palm trees around the water. It has been listed by Iphaep (Paraíba's state heritage institute) since 1980.
Discover Parque Solon de Lucena (Lagoa)
Known as the Bica because of the freshwater spring at its center, it covers 26.8 hectares of Atlantic Forest with a zoo. The name honors botanist Manuel Arruda Câmara.
Discover Parque Zoobotânico Arruda Câmara (Bica)
Opened in 1991 in Tambaú, the two-story colonial-style building houses 128 craft shops. You will find lace, leather and wood pieces, costume jewelry, clothing and souvenirs made in the state.

The capital's city beach, with a promenade, hotels and seafront restaurants. Catamarans leave from here for the Picãozinho natural pools.
To choose before you go
Where each tour starts, how long it takes, how it is done, what is included and the price range.
Boarding is on the sand at Tambaú, where operators keep kiosks and sell the tour. The crossing to the reef takes 10 to 15 minutes, with views of the Cabo Branco barrier and the Estação Cabo Branco. Boats anchor near the corals, about 2 km from the coast. The pools only appear at low tide: the water becomes shallow and still between the reefs, with schools of small fish. Time in the water is usually around two hours. The vessels have a bar on board, life jackets and buoys. Some have a water slide and other on-board attractions. Snorkel rental and underwater photos are charged separately.
Stops: Praia de Tambaú, Piscinas Naturais de Picãozinho.
Includes: Round-trip crossing, life jackets and flotation devices, time in the pools. Usually paid separately: snorkel rental, underwater photos, drinks and snacks from the bar. Some operators offer discounts for advance payment or for small children; check the current table of vendors.
Tip: Check the tide table and departure time when you buy: it changes daily. In high season, book in advance. Bring sunscreen, a towel and, if you have one, a snorkel mask. Do not step on the corals. Food and drinks stay on board; they do not go into the water.
Best time: Low tide matters more than the month. Historically, November tends to be drier; April requires attention due to rainfall.
Agencies that run it: Paraíba Travel, Vem Passear em Jampa, Jampatur, 2 Clicks Turismo, PNP Agência de Turismo (Pnp Passeios e Serviços Ltda.), Maresia Turismo.
R$ 50 to R$ 99 · per person, adult, boat only (no transfer)The Jacaré sunset takes place on the Rio Paraíba, in front of Praia do Jacaré in Cabedelo. In the late afternoon, saxophonist Jurandy do Sax sails on a small boat and plays Ravel's Bolero as the sun goes down. You can watch from the waterfront or from a catamaran that departs from the pier. The catamaran follows a short route through the surrounding mangroves, with a violinist, forró music and characters inspired by Lampião and Maria Bonita. Jurandy often circles other boats and boards to play for the passengers. On the waterfront there is a promenade and a craft village. Agencies sell the tour with hotel transfer; in that arrangement the catamaran is usually optional and paid separately.
Stops: Praia do Jacaré, Rio Paraíba, Vila de artesanato do Jacaré.
Includes: On the catamaran: sailing, on-board shows and a bar. Food and drinks are charged separately. In agency packages, hotel transfer is often included, and the catamaran is usually optional and billed separately. Check the current table.
Tip: Arrive early to get a spot on the waterfront or to board calmly. The sunset time changes throughout the year. By car or ride-hailing app, the trip from Cabo Branco or Tambaú is short; arrange your return before you go, because there is heavier traffic at the end of the spectacle.

Best time to go
November usually has little rain on average historically, which favors beach days. April calls for more attention to the possibility of rain. For the natural pools of Picãozinho, low tide is more decisive than the month of travel.
Summer · High demand
INMET's normal rainfall (1991–2020) is about 86 mm, with an average high near 31 °C and low near 25 °C. Showers are usually short and leave clear days for the beach. Natural pool trips depend on the tide, not the month. It's vacation season, with increased demand for boats, buggies and transfers: book in advance.
Hot · Carnival
INMET normal of about 106 mm, with lows near 25 °C. Rain may come in showers and cloudy weather can affect some tour departures. When Carnival falls in the month, demand rises: book tours, transfers and restaurant tables in advance. Check the tide table before booking Picãozinho, Seixas or Areia Vermelha.
Frequent rain · Warm sea
INMET normal of about 171 mm, with many rainy days. The average high is near 31 °C and the low near 25 °C. Boats may not run in bad weather: leave a buffer day in your itinerary. The historic center and Centro Cultural São Francisco serve as alternatives on cloudy days. When Easter Week falls in this period, demand increases.
Rainy season begins · Reserve day
INMET normal of about 236 mm, at the start of the rainiest season. The average low is near 24 °C. Rain calls for more flexibility: book boat and buggy tours with an alternate date. In the breaks between downpours, the Tambaú and Cabo Branco waterfronts remain active. Plan museums, the historic center and local handicrafts as backup activities.
Heavy rain · Less activity
It is one of the months of heavy rain in the capital, within the rainiest period of the year, April to July. The sea becomes greyer on overcast days and nautical tours can be cancelled. Still, there are sunny days between showers. Bring a lightweight raincoat and book tours with the option to reschedule. Activity is usually lower outside holidays.
Stronger rain · June festivals
INMET normal of about 369 mm is the highest of the year in João Pessoa. Days tend to be milder and overcast. Tours depend on weather and tides and may be rescheduled. June is the month of festas juninas in the state: check the program and book accommodation and transfers in advance, as demand can rise. Use the historic center and local crafts as alternatives on rainy days.
School holidays · Heavy rain
INMET normal of about 285 mm, with frequent rain. Since it's the school holiday month, the most sought-after tours, like Picãozinho, Areia Vermelha and the Jacaré sunset, can get crowded. Book in advance and keep a spare day. Take advantage of sunny windows and low tide. Bring a lightweight raincoat and swimwear.
Rain decreases · Cooler nights
INMET normal falls to about 134 mm, and the average low is about 22 °C, one of the year's lowest. Rain still comes in showers, but there are more clear days. Good month to combine the historic center with nautical tours. Always check the tide table for Picãozinho, Seixas and Areia Vermelha.
Weather settling · Calmer sea
INMET normal is about 74 mm, with average high near 29 °C and low near 23 °C. Rain decreases and sunny days become more common. Nautical and buggy tours become more regular, but still depend on tide and weather. There's some chance of short showers: carry a lightweight raincoat in your bag.
Little rain · Beach days
INMET normal of about 31 mm, with an average high near 30 °C and low near 24 °C. The month is good for the beach, natural pools and the Litoral Sul. Low tide still determines departures to Picãozinho, Seixas and Areia Vermelha: check the tide table. Demand tends to grow around holidays and long weekends.
Dry month · Warm sea
INMET normal of about 21 mm, the lowest of the year, with an average low near 25 °C. Few rainy days and good conditions for beach, boat and buggy outings. Still, low tide determines natural pool trips. Book the Jacaré sunset and nautical tours in advance, as year-end demand starts to pick up.
Summer starts · High demand
INMET normal of about 37 mm, with short heavy showers and many sunny days. The average high is near 31 °C. It's vacation and year-end season, with high demand for boats, buggies and transfers. Book tours and transport ahead. Check the tide table for Picãozinho, Seixas and Areia Vermelha.
Plan the journey
João Pessoa is served by the Aeroporto Internacional Presidente Castro Pinto (JPA), in the Metropolitan Region, outside the capital municipality. It's about 11 km from downtown. Gol, LATAM and Azul operate at the airport.
There are direct flights from São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Brasília, Belo Horizonte, Salvador, Recife and Uberlândia. There is also a direct flight from Buenos Aires with Gol in some periods. Routes and frequency change by season, so check the current network with the airline. Travelers from other regions usually arrive via this airport, often with a connection.
From the airport to the waterfront (Tambaú, Cabo Branco, Manaíra), the car trip takes about 40 minutes, depending on traffic. Access is via BR-230. Alternatively, Recife International Airport is a little over 130 km from João Pessoa and can serve when flights to JPA don't fit the itinerary.
Book the transfer to the hotel before departing, especially if the flight arrives at night.
Long-distance buses arrive at Terminal Rodoviário Severino Camelo. The bus station is about 8 km from the airport.
From Recife, the trip takes about 2 to 2h30. Progresso, Total, Catedral and Expresso São Luiz operate the route, and departures usually leave from the Terminal Integrado de Passageiros (TIP). There are many departures throughout the day. Duration varies by company and service type.
From Natal, the trip takes about 3 hours. Progresso, Expresso São Luiz and Gravataense operate the route. Check schedules and fares on the companies' websites or ticket platforms.
There is no direct bus between Pipa (RN) and João Pessoa. The route requires transfers, and the alternative is a private transfer or a car.
From the airport to the hotel there are taxis, apps and shared or private transfers. There is also an urban bus line to the bus station area, but with luggage a reserved transfer is more practical. Arrange the transfer before arrival.
The main access is via BR-101, the coastal highway, which is almost completely dual carriageway in the stretch between Natal, João Pessoa and Recife. BR-230 links the capital to Campina Grande and overlaps BR-101 near the airport, functioning as a ring road.
Approximate road distances to João Pessoa: • Recife: about 120 km, around 2 hours. • Natal: about 180 km, around 2h30. • Pipa (RN): about 145 km, via RN-003 to Goianinha and then BR-101. • Campina Grande: about 125 km, via BR-230.
Those heading to Conde follow BR-101 toward Recife, without entering the capital. The turnoff to Conde's coast is about 12 km past the airport.
In the sections mentioned, consulted sources do not mention a ferry. Before leaving, check road conditions in a maps app and plan refueling.
Renting a car is not mandatory for the city itinerary. The Cabo Branco, Tambaú and Manaíra waterfront has a bike lane and allows walking between stretches. Those staying in Cabo Branco can walk to Tambaú.
City buses cover the waterfront, historic center and the Mercado de Artesanato area. Fares are adjusted every January, so check Semob-JP's current table. Buses are cheap but require more time and route planning. Use a map app to plan your route.
Uber, 99 and taxis operate in the city and are the most direct option for the historic center, Picãozinho and other points outside the waterfront.
For more distant beaches, such as those in Conde, a rental car gives more freedom. Through apps, the outbound ride can be hard to get and the return is uncertain. Without a car, the option is to book a tour that departs from the hotel or arrange transport in advance.
There are two ways to organize arrival.
Package with transfer: tour operators and airlines sell packages including flight, accommodation and airport-to-hotel transfer. Azul Viagens, for example, has already announced flights and packages from inland cities to João Pessoa. The transfer is already reserved, and tours can include hotel pickup. It's practical for those arriving at night or traveling with family.
On your own: the traveler buys the ticket and chooses how to get from the airport to the hotel (taxi, app or reserved transfer). In the city you can use apps and buy tours directly from operators, such as natural pools, Orla do Jacaré and Ilha Vermelha. App drivers often do tours if booked in advance.
Those coming from Recife or Natal without a car can book a round-trip tour and skip the return. The guide picks up at the hotel and carries the luggage (check the limit with the agency).
In both cases, book transfers and tours before arrival, especially on holidays and in high season.

Your base to explore
Before you go
A little planning leaves more time to enjoy the journey.
November usually has little rain on average historically, which favors beach days. April calls for more attention to the possibility of rain. For the natural pools of Picãozinho, low tide is more decisive than the month of travel.
Three days balance the visit: one for São Francisco, Casa da Pólvora and the Cathedral; another for Tambaú, feirinha and crafts; and the third for Cabo Branco, the Farol do Cabo Branco and the Estação Cabo Branco. A fourth day allows including Seixas or Picãozinho, depending on the tide.
Tambaú is a base for beach, feirinha and handicrafts nearby. Cabo Branco favors a stay focused on walking along the waterfront and the beach, while keeping access to the neighboring district. To visit the historic center, book your own transfer instead of relying on beach days.
Take your trash with you, follow the signs and support local businesses. In natural areas, follow the visiting guidelines.

Presidente Castro Pinto is located in Bayeux. It serves João Pessoa, but travelers need to continue by road to their accommodation in the capital.
Include the Centro Cultural São Francisco, the Casa da Pólvora and the Catedral de Nossa Senhora das Neves. The ensemble helps to understand the city that developed from the Rio Sanhauá.
Devote one day to Tambaú and crafts, and another to Praia de Cabo Branco, the Farol do Cabo Branco and the Estação Cabo Branco. This way, cultural visits aren't squeezed between beach times.
Yes. Tours to the natural pools of Picãozinho, off Tambaú, depend on low tide. Check the tide table before choosing the day and arrange the departure with a local operator.
Rubacão, tapioca and cuscuz with carne de sol are options to taste local flavors. Spread these meals across days in the historic center and on the waterfront.
Admission is paid and tickets are sold only at the box office on the day of the visit. Sales end 30 minutes before closing. Half-price tickets are available, upon proof: students, teachers, people aged 60 and over, people with disabilities, and low-income young people aged 15 to 29 registered in CadÚnico. Children up to 7 years old do not pay. Residents of João Pessoa have free-admission arrangements on specific days, with proof of residence and subject to ticket availability. This does not apply to excursions and organized groups. Visits can be guided, with monitors at fixed times, or self-guided. The venue receives visitors Tuesday through Sunday, and hours change on holidays. Check the current price list before going.
Visits to Estação Cabo Branco – Ciência, Cultura e Artes are open to the public, free of charge, and take place from Tuesday to Sunday. The panoramic terrace shows part of the coastline, the Ponta do Seixas and the Farol do Cabo Branco. At the lighthouse, access to the exterior area and the craft market is also free. The interior of the tower usually does not receive visitors. Services such as parking and private areas around the site may charge fees, so check the current list of who charges. Both are in the Cabo Branco neighborhood and can be included in the same outing. The Ponta do Seixas, the easternmost point of the Americas, is about 800 meters from the lighthouse. Hours may change on holidays.
Areia Vermelha is a sandbank that only appears at low tide, inside the Parque Estadual Marinho de Areia Vermelha. Boats depart from Cabedelo, a neighboring municipality of João Pessoa. Boarding usually takes place at the beaches of Camboinha, do Poço or Ponta de Campina, depending on the operator. The crossing takes 15 to 20 minutes. On the island, stay time is usually between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, until the tide rises. Boarding and disembarking are done in the water, so bring a waterproof backpack. Also bring sunscreen and a cap, because there are no chair or umbrella rentals. For preservation reasons, do not bring food to the island. Each operator sets the day and time according to the tide table. The fee is paid separately and varies by boat.
Praia Fluvial do Jacaré is at the mouth of the Paraíba River, in Cabedelo, not João Pessoa. Boats depart from the pier on Avenida Pôr do Sol. Departures are usually late afternoon, around 4:00 PM, and vary by operator. The tour lasts about 1.5 hours. At sunset, saxophonist Jurandy do Sax plays Ravel's Bolero from a small boat. Some operators offer forró and cultural performances on board. Some do not allow outside drinks and snacks, and there is a bar on the boats. The tour often sells out, so book in advance. Those who prefer to stay on land can watch the sunset from the riverfront. Operators set the days of operation, and cloudy weather does not prevent the boat from leaving.
No. The beach, in the municipality of Conde, has two areas separated by a rock formation. In the first area, wearing clothes is mandatory. That section houses the bar, tables with umbrellas and the natural pools at low tide. The coconut tree on the rock, much photographed, is outside the naturist area. In the second, naturist area, nudity is mandatory. A gate attendant explains the rules at the entrance, which follow the municipal law of Conde. Unaccompanied men are not allowed entry unless they hold a naturist ID card. It is forbidden to photograph or film naked people without consent or to behave in a sexual manner. There is no age restriction. Entrance is free, but parking is paid. Observe the signs and choose the side before entering.
Both are in Cabedelo, a neighboring municipality about 10–15 km from the Tambaú area. You can combine them, but the tide decides. Areia Vermelha only appears at low tide, and the time changes each day. The sunset boats leave in the late afternoon. If low tide occurs in the morning or early afternoon, the day works well: island first, sunset afterwards. If it doesn't, plan the tours on separate days. Check the tide table before booking. Ask the operator for the departure time and the days the sunset tour runs, since some operate on fixed weekdays. Also arrange round-trip transfer, as the sunset tour finishes late in the afternoon.
Three days cover the essentials. Four or five days make the itinerary more relaxed. One possible split: one day for the historic center (Centro Cultural São Francisco, Casa da Pólvora, Varadouro). One day for the Tambaú and Cabo Branco waterfront, with Estação Cabo Branco and Farol do Cabo Branco. One day in Cabedelo, with Areia Vermelha and the Jacaré sunset, if the tide allows. One day on the southern coast, in Conde, for Coqueirinho and Tambaba. The natural pools of Picãozinho and Seixas fit into a low-tide day. Leave some margin in your schedule, because tides and weather can change sea excursions.
Most are, with precautions. At Centro Cultural São Francisco, children up to 7 years old do not pay admission. Estação Cabo Branco offers school programs and, at certain times, activities for children aged 6 to 14, with registration. On Areia Vermelha, boats usually provide life jackets and buoys, and the water tends to reach an adult's waist at low tide. Since disembarkation is in the water, bring sunscreen, a hat and swimwear. At Tambaba, the naturist area has no age restriction, and those who prefer to wear clothes stay in the clothed section. For boat tours, ask the operator about minimum age limits and safety equipment.
It depends on the tour. At Centro Cultural São Francisco, visitors can explore on their own or join a guided visit. Estação Cabo Branco and Farol do Cabo Branco have direct access, no agency needed. For Areia Vermelha, you can drive or take a ride-hailing app to the departure beach in Cabedelo and hire a boat on-site, but boats only leave at low tide. Local operators sell the tour with hotel pickup, and there are versions without transfer. For the Jacaré sunset, boat tours are sold by operators who usually require advance booking. If you prefer not to drive, you can book a transfer with the tour. Check what is included before confirming.
