About Praia de Almofala
Praia de Almofala (beach) is in the district of the same name, 12 kilometers from downtown Itarema, on Ceará's West Coast. It is a still-unspoiled beach, with a long strip of sand, surrounded by dunes and coconut groves, with an emerald-green sea of clean, calm water.
The district is the land of the Tremembé Indigenous people and is home to the historic Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição (church), which spent decades buried by the dunes. The church and the beach appear in the novel "Oração para desaparecer," by Ceará writer Socorro Acioli.
On the sand, you can walk, drink coconut water, eat seafood and watch traditional fishing with jangadas (wooden sailing rafts) and small boats. Almofala is also home to the Projeto Tamar base in Ceará, set up in 1993 to protect the sea turtles that get accidentally caught in the region's fish traps.
About 4 kilometers away is Praia de Torrões, which you can combine in the same outing.
