About Buraco Azul de Caiçara

Buraco Azul de Caiçara is a lagoon of turquoise water in the district of Caiçara, in Cruz, near Jericoacoara. Despite the name (Blue Hole), it is not a natural formation: the hole was dug to remove soil used to build a highway in the region and later filled with rainwater.

The vivid color comes from the pale, limestone-rich soil of the bottom and walls, which reflects the sunlight. The lagoon is surrounded by whitish banks, and photos of the turquoise water on social media turned it into one of the most popular outings from Jeri.

Today Buraco Azul works as a private swimming spot. There is a deck for getting into the water, swings and hammocks for photos, lounge chairs, a restaurant and restrooms. You can swim, float and spend a few hours by the water.

The lagoon has deep sections. If you are not a strong swimmer, wear a life jacket and follow the instructions of the site's safety staff. Families with children should stay in the areas marked for swimming.
