About Vila de Monsarás

The Vila de Monsarás is a fishing community in the countryside of Salvaterra, on Marajó Island. It was the site of Salvaterra's first seat, with the area's first church, first house and first school.

According to the city government, the colonization of Salvaterra began in Monsarás, around the 18th century, with missionary friars. From its religious past, the village preserves the Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário and remains of old buildings.

Today Monsarás lives off fishing. Boats dock at the pier on the Igarapé dos Pescadores, surrounded by forest, where fish is shipped to the village itself and to Belém. It is a relaxed outing, for those who want to see daily life in a Marajó village away from the crowds.

The village is farther away than Joanes and the beaches near town, so it gets few visitors. It is worthwhile if you like history and simple places.
