About Praia Grande de Salvaterra
Praia Grande is the main beach of Salvaterra, on Marajó Island. It is right in town, facing Marajó Bay, and is the most popular with visitors, especially on weekends and during the July vacation.
The stretch of sand is long, about 1.5 km, with vegetation along it. Beside the beach runs a developed waterfront, with a promenade, a bike path, a viewpoint, playground equipment and a giant crab sculpture that has become a photo spot. Bars, restaurants and pousadas face the sand and are open all year.
The water is warm, brownish and has few waves. Depending on the time of year, it is fresher or more brackish, from the mix of river and sea. At high tide the beach drops off sharply: the water gets deep within the first few steps.
In the late afternoon, the sun sets over the water and the waterfront comes alive, with music, carimbó (a traditional Pará dance) and Pará food. It is an easy-to-reach beach, good for families and anyone who wants to walk or bike along the waterfront.
