About Praia da Mangabeira

Praia da Mangabeira is the best-known beach in Ponta de Pedras, on the southeastern coast of Marajó Island. It is about 10 km from downtown and is washed by the fresh waters of Marajó Bay. The stretch of sand is nearly 2 km long, with many coconut palms along the shore.

The name is tied to the town's history. When the settlement began, the place was called Mangabeira. The name Ponta de Pedras came when the settlement was raised to the status of a village, in 1877.

The waterfront is developed, with public showers and standardized beach stalls. The beachfront bars serve fish and shrimp. It is a traditional meeting place for locals and visitors, especially on weekends and during school vacations.

The water is fresh and the tide changes the landscape a lot during the day: at ebb tide the stretch of sand gets much wider. It is an easy-to-reach beach, good for families and anyone who just wants to relax and swim.
