About Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso

The Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso is the oldest building in Guaratuba, on the Paraná coast. It stands on the town's central square and is dedicated to the town's patron saint.

Work began in 1768 and the church was blessed in 1771, the same year the village of Guaratuba was founded. According to tradition, the walls were built with stones, shells, sand and whale oil, by enslaved labor. For decades, the church also served as the village cemetery. It was listed by Iphan in 1938 and is also protected as state heritage.

The facade is simple, of whitewashed masonry, in the style of the colonial churches of the coast, with the bell tower to one side. Inside are the polychrome wooden statue of Nossa Senhora do Bom Sucesso and a baptismal font carved in stone.

The visit is quick and easy, on level ground, and pairs well with a stroll around the square and downtown.
