Ópera de Arame

A theater with a tubular frame and a transparent roof built over a lake, inside a former quarry. The setting of forest and water around it makes the building an attraction in itself.

About Ópera de Arame

The Ópera de Arame is a theater made of steel tubes, wire mesh and transparent polycarbonate panels. It is in the Parque das Pedreiras, in the Abranches neighborhood, in a disused quarry. The building was designed by architect Domingos Bongestabs and opened in 1992, after being assembled in about 75 days.

The round theater sits in the middle of a lake and is reached by a walkway over the water. Around it are the rock wall left by the old quarrying and native forest, with araucaria pines and other local trees. The transparent roof and walls keep the vegetation, the water and the sky in view from inside.

Many people go just to see the building, cross the walkway and photograph the lake and the rock wall. The venue also hosts concerts and shows; the schedule is published by the park administration.

Next door is the Pedreira Paulo Leminski, an open-air venue for big concerts, and the same park has the Memorial Jaime Lerner, which honors former mayor Jaime Lerner. The visit is short and fits well into a route with the city's other parks.
