About Jardim Botânico de Curitiba
The Jardim Botânico (Botanical Garden) is Curitiba's best-known landmark. It opened in 1991 and is officially named after Francisca Maria Garfunkel Rischbieter. It is a municipal conservation area, with lakes, a native forest grove and gardens open to visitors.
The star attraction is the iron-and-glass greenhouse, inspired by London's Crystal Palace. Inside are plants from the Atlantic Forest. In front of it stretch the French-style gardens, with geometric flower beds and a fountain.
Besides the greenhouse, the park has the Museu Botânico Municipal (Municipal Botanical Museum), with one of the largest herbaria in Brazil, the Galeria das Quatro Estações (Four Seasons Gallery) and the Jardim das Sensações (Garden of Senses). In the latter, you walk a short path blindfolded and identify plants by touch and smell, with signs in Braille.
A trail circles the area and passes through the woods, home to birds, squirrels and many species of butterflies. The ground is almost all flat, and the greenhouse has ramp access at the back, which makes the outing easy for children, older people and people with reduced mobility.
Before you go
Practical information
How much time to set aside
One to two hours lets you see the greenhouse, the French gardens and the Jardim das Sensações and walk part of the trail without rushing.
Best time
Early in the morning, especially on weekdays, when the park is empty and the light is good for photos of the greenhouse; in spring the flower beds are at their fullest. On weekends it gets very crowded.
How to get there
It is in the Jardim Botânico neighborhood, outside downtown, with the main entrance on Rua Engenheiro Ostoja Roguski. The Linha Turismo, a tourist bus that leaves from Praça Tiradentes, stops at the park. By car, there are parking lots, including one reached from Avenida Prefeito Lothario Meissner. You can also get there by bike on bike paths, but cycling is not allowed inside the garden.
Tip
The Jardim das Sensações is closed on Mondays and has shorter hours than the park; if you want to do the blindfolded walk, arrive earlier and check the hours on the official website. Drones are prohibited.
