About Theatro Municipal de Antonina
The Theatro Municipal de Antonina is one of the best-known historic buildings in the town, on the Paraná coast. It was built in the second half of the 19th century by the Sociedade Teatral de Antonina, founded in 1875, and passed to the town government in the early 20th century.
The building dates from Antonina's economic golden age, when the port kept the town busy. The ornate eclectic facade is what catches the eye of passersby.
The theater has a curious story. On April 24, 1933, the ship Almirante Jaceguay docked in Antonina, and stars of the golden age of Brazilian radio came ashore, such as Carmen Miranda, Aracy de Almeida, Sílvio Caldas, Procópio Ferreira and conductor Ary Barroso, who put on a show that became part of the town's memory.
The visit is usually quick and pairs well with a walk through the historic center. The theater also hosts concerts and cultural events; if you want to see the interior, check the program beforehand.
