About Centro Histórico de Antonina
The Centro Histórico de Antonina (historic center) is the ensemble of streets, mansions, townhouses and warehouses on the shore of the Baía de Antonina, on the northern coast of Paraná. It was listed as national heritage by Iphan in 2012.
The town is among the oldest settlements in Paraná. In the 19th century, its port shipped out the erva-mate (yerba mate) that came down from the plateau, and that wealth gave rise to the Portuguese-Brazilian and eclectic townhouses, the warehouses and the stone sidewalks that still make up downtown.
You explore it on foot. Along the way you see the Armazém Macedo, a 19th-century yerba mate warehouse on the waterfront, the Fonte da Carioca (fountain), the railway station opened in 1916, the Pharmacia Internacional and the Theatro Municipal, as well as historic churches such as the Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Pilar. From the high ground near the Matriz, the view opens onto the bay, with boats and the mountains of the Serra do Mar in the background.
The ground is mostly flat near the waterfront, but there are slopes and stairways up to the upper part of town. The uneven stone streets call for sturdy shoes and care if you have reduced mobility.
