About Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Piedade
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Piedade is the main church of Rio Claro, in the south of Rio de Janeiro state. It stands at the top of a flight of steps, facing Praça Fagundes Varela, downtown.
It was built between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with the labor of enslaved people. It holds the statue of Nossa Senhora da Piedade, the municipality's patron saint.
It's an active parish church, seat of the Paróquia Nossa Senhora da Piedade, in the Diocese of Barra do Piraí–Volta Redonda. The visit goes well with a stroll around the square, which has benches, palm trees and a children's play area, and through the downtown streets.
To reach the door you have to climb the steps, which can be hard for people with reduced mobility.
