About Cachoeira Sebastião Marinho
Cachoeira Sebastião Marinho is in Lídice, a mountain district of Rio Claro, in the south of Rio de Janeiro state, about 5 kilometers from the district center. It's one of the most visited waterfalls in the region, precisely because it's easy to reach: the pavement goes all the way there.
It's not a tall drop. The water flows constantly over stone slabs and forms a wide pool, which is really a continuation of the river. Most of it is shallow, but there are a few deep spots where you can't touch bottom. Among the rocks there's even a natural slide.
On the banks there's a good lawn where you can spread your towel and spend the day, and the view opens onto the green hills around. That's why it's the favorite waterfall of families with small children and usually fills up on hot weekends.
Near the waterfall there's parking and bars, and Manelão's restaurant is right next door, making it easy to stretch your visit into lunchtime.

Practical information
How much time to set aside
You can spend anywhere from two hours to a full day, swimming in the river, picnicking on the lawn and having lunch nearby.
Best time
In summer and on hot days, from late morning to mid-afternoon, when the sun hits the water. After heavy rain the river rises and gets murky; avoid swimming then.
How to get there
It's on Estrada Rio das Pedras, about 5 km from central Lídice, with paved access all the way to the waterfall. Lídice is on the RJ-155 (Rodovia Saturnino Braga), between Barra Mansa and Angra dos Reis. From Rio de Janeiro, take the RJ-145 at Piraí to the RJ-155.
Tip
Most of the pool is shallow, but there are deep spots: keep an eye on children and non-swimmers. Arrive early on weekends to get a spot on the lawn.
