About Praia do Riacho

Praia do Riacho (beach) is at the southern end of São Miguel dos Milagres, on the north coast of Alagoas, on the border with Praia do Marceneiro, in Passo de Camaragibe. It is part of the Rota Ecológica dos Milagres (Ecological Route), a stretch of the Costa dos Corais known for its calm sea and small villages.

The name comes from the stream (riacho) that flows onto the sand and separates the two beaches. The strip of sand is wide and light, with many coconut palms, and the sea, protected by the reefs, turns greenish and almost without waves at low tide.

It is one of the quietest beaches on the route. There are few businesses, which makes for long walks and unhurried swims. At the bend of the beach stands the small Capela dos Milagres (chapel), much photographed and popular for weddings.

At low tide, jangadas (rafts) leave for the natural pools formed over the reefs. You can also walk along the sand to the neighboring beaches and to the mangrove at the mouth of the stream. The calm sea appeals to families with children.

Before you go

Practical information

How much time to set aside

Half a day is enough for swimming and walking; a full day if you include the trip to the natural pools.

Best time

From September to March, with less rain; plan your visit by the tide table, because at low tide the sea is calmer and the natural pools appear.

How to get there

It is in the south of São Miguel dos Milagres, by the border with Passo de Camaragibe, with access via the AL-101 Norte highway and dirt streets down to the sand. Maceió is about 100 km away, and Maragogi is to the north.

Tip

Check the tide table before you go and bring water and sunscreen, because facilities on the sand are limited.
