Maragogi is about 130 km from Maceió, on the AL-101 Norte, and about 130 km from Recife, via the BR-101 and the PE-060. By car it takes about 2 and a half hours. There are regular buses from the Maceió Bus Terminal. The Maceió and Recife airports are at similar distances.

How many days

Three days: one for the galés (offshore reef pools), one for the northern beaches, such as Barra Grande and Antunes, and a spare one to match the tide. Many people use Maragogi as a base for the whole Costa dos Corais and stay a week.

When to go

From September to March there is more sun and the sea is usually clearer. The rains are concentrated roughly from April to July. Tours depend on low tide, which is lowest around the full and new moons. The Festa de São Bento is in March, and the town's anniversary is at the end of April.

Do you need a car?

For the center and the boat tours, no: agencies pick you up at your hotel. For Antunes, Ponta de Mangue and Peroba, more than 8 km from the center, a car, buggy or taxi helps. Avoid driving on the region's highways at night.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know the best day for the galés?

The boats only leave at low tide, and the time changes every day. Check the tide table and choose days close to the full and new moons. At high tide, the trip is called off.

Galés or Caminho de Moisés?

They are different trips. The galés (offshore reef pools) are about 6 km off the coast and require a boat; the Caminho de Moisés (Moses' Path) is a sandbank in Barra Grande that you can reach on foot when the tide is very low. With two days, you can do both.

Can I stay in Maragogi without a car?

Yes. There are buses from Maceió, airport transfers and agencies that pick you up at your hotel for tours. You only miss a car for the more remote beaches.

Is there a visitor limit at the galés?

Yes. The area is part of the APA Costa dos Corais (environmental protection area), and the number of people per day is controlled. In high season, book the trip ahead.
