About Parque Estadual Massairo Okamura
Parque Estadual Massairo Okamura is a protected area of cerrado (Brazilian savanna) in the middle of Cuiabá, near the Centro Político Administrativo (CPA). It covers about 51 hectares and protects the springs of the Barbado stream, which runs through the city to the Rio Cuiabá (river).
The area was created as an ecological reserve in 2000 and became a state park in 2001. It is managed by the State Environment Department (Sema-MT). Inside the park is the Praça Nações Indígenas (square), dedicated to the memory of the state's Indigenous peoples, among them the Bororo, who lived in the region.
You explore on foot, along about 2 km of trails shaded by native forest, with small bridges and a viewpoint. The park has an environmental education center and restrooms. You will often see marmosets, howler monkeys and many birds along the way.
Locals use the park for walking and running, and some trails have uphill sections. It is a relaxed outing, good for anyone who wants shade and nature without leaving the city.
