About Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário e São Benedito is considered the oldest church in Cuiabá and one of the landmarks of the city's founding. It stands on a hill where the gold diggings of the early town operated, on Praça do Rosário, near Morro da Luz.
It was built in the 18th century with earthen walls, in rammed earth; later extensions used adobe. The facade is simple, typical of the colonial period. Inside, the altars follow the Baroque-Rococo style, with gilded and silvered carvings. The church is listed by Iphan (Brazil's national heritage institute).
Devotion to Saint Benedict arrived with enslaved Africans, back in the 18th century. The church is the home of the Festa de São Benedito, one of the most popular religious celebrations in Mato Grosso. In July, it brings together Masses, novenas, a procession and the traditional tchá cô bolo, Cuiabá-style tea with cake.
The visit is quick and pairs well with a walk through the Centro Histórico. It is an active church, so go in quietly and respect the services.
