Things to do in Lençóis
- Centro Histórico Formed during the diamond rush that began in 1845, the 19th-century ensemble of houses was protected by Iphan (the national heritage institute) in 1973 and includes about 570 buildings. The adobe and stone buildings have colorful facades and irregular streets that follow the slope of the mountains.
- Ribeirão do Meio A clear-water pool about 3.5 km from downtown, reached by an easy trail of roughly 45 minutes. The main attraction is a natural rock slide that goes straight into the water, called Rala Bunda ("butt scraper") by locals.
- Serrano e Salão de Areias Coloridas The Serrano caldeirões are natural pools carved into the rock, about 15 minutes on foot from downtown, at the spot where the first local diamond was found. 500 meters away is Salão de Areias Coloridas, with sands in shades of pink, red, yellow and purple.
- Gruta do Lapão A sandstone and conglomerate cave in Parque Nacional da Chapada Diamantina, with an internal route of about 800 meters. The eastern entrance, 80 meters wide and 40 meters high, is said to be the largest in the country among caves in this type of rock.
- Poço do Diabo A wide waterfall on the Mucugezinho River that forms a deep pool of dark water, great for swimming. It is close to the road and fits even into half a day.
When to go
From April to October, in the dry season, the trails are firm. From November to March it rains more: the waterfalls fill up, but rivers can rise suddenly and close tours. The miners' Festa do Senhor dos Passos runs from late January to early February, with the main day on February 2.
How many days to stay
Two days cover the town and the trails that leave from it on foot. Since Lençóis is the base for the northern Chapada, most people stay four to five days and head out from here to Pai Inácio, Fumaça and the Iraquara caves.
