Niterói – RJ about 15 km from Rio de Janeiro
How to get there
-
Santos Dumont (SDU) Rio de Janeiro · 17 km
-
Galeão (Tom Jobim) (GIG) Rio de Janeiro · 28 km
-
Terminal Rodoviário Roberto Silveira 1 km
Approximate road distances. Check flights and bus schedules before you travel.
From Rio it's about 15-25 km by road via the Ponte Rio–Niterói (30-50 min, depending on traffic). There are ferries linking Praça XV (RJ) to Praça Arariboia (Niterói). Buses depart from Terminal Novo Rio and arrive at the Roberto Silveira bus station. The nearest airport is Santos Dumont (SDU); Galeão (GIG) also serves the area.
How many days
Allow 1 day for the MAC, the Icaraí waterfront and Parque da Cidade. With 2 days include Itacoatiara (beach and the trilha do Costão) and the Fortaleza de Santa Cruz. A third day allows for Camboinhas and Itaipu with relaxed beach time.
When to go
April to September tend to be drier months with mild temperatures, good for viewpoints and trails. In summer (December to February) it's hotter and rainier; beaches get crowded and demand rises during holidays. Events in the capital affect accommodation and traffic in the surrounding area.
Do you need a car?
In Icaraí, Boa Viagem and the Centro you can get around on foot. For Parque da Cidade, Itacoatiara, Camboinhas and Fortaleza de Santa Cruz it's helpful to have a car or ride‑hailing app; there are buses linking the Centro to the Região Oceânica through the tunnels, but they take longer.
