About Instituto Ricardo Brennand

The Instituto Ricardo Brennand is a cultural complex in the Várzea neighborhood, in Recife's West Zone, created by collector Ricardo Brennand. It occupies land from the old São João sugar mill, surrounded by a preserved Atlantic Forest reserve.

The best-known building is the Castelo São João, a small exposed-brick castle inspired by medieval architecture, which holds one of the largest collections of bladed weapons in the world, with more than 3,000 pieces, including swords, daggers and armor. There is also an art gallery, a library, a Gothic-style chapel and gardens with sculptures.

The art gallery holds the world's largest collection of paintings by Dutchman Frans Post, who portrayed Pernambuco landscapes in the 17th century, during Dutch rule. The collection also has works by Brazilian and European artists, tapestries, stained glass and furniture.

It is an outing for history and art lovers, and kids enjoy it because of the armor and the castle. The gardens are spacious and good for walking.
