About Parque Natural Municipal de Porto Velho

The Parque Natural Municipal de Porto Velho, officially the Parque Natural Raimundo Paraguassu de Oliveira, is a protected area of about 390 hectares of Amazon rainforest in the north of Rondônia's capital. It is the handiest place to step into the forest without leaving the city.

The park was created by municipal decree in 1989. In 2019, a municipal law gave it its current name, in honor of Raimundo Paraguassu de Oliveira. It is managed by the Municipal Environment Department.

The main attraction is the trails. There is a walking trail of about 3 km through the forest, done in groups led by environmental agents on weekends and holidays, and a suspended trail that runs raised through the vegetation. Along the way, with luck, you can see birds and small animals.

The Museu do Acervo Biológico holds about 150 preserved species of Amazonian wildlife, a good complement for children and curious minds. The park also has a native seedling nursery, which gives seedlings to visitors who register, a playground, a picnic area and a zip line.

The outing appeals to families and people who like to walk. The trails take moderate energy and closed-toe shoes; if you don't want to walk, you can stay at the museum and the common areas.
