About Memorial do Cerrado
The Memorial do Cerrado is an open-air museum on Campus II of PUC Goiás, in Goiânia. It is run by the university, through the Instituto do Trópico Subúmido, and tells the natural and human history of the cerrado (Brazilian savanna) and the Goiás countryside.
The highlight is the Vila Cenográfica Santa Luzia, a life-size re-creation of a colonial-era village, with stone streets, houses, a church and old-time workshops. The tour continues through replicas of a quilombo (a community of escaped slaves), with wattle-and-daub buildings, and a Timbira-style Indigenous village, as well as a farm.
The complex also has a Natural History Museum, with fossils, rocks and cerrado animals, and nature trails through an area of preserved forest and cerrado. It is an educational outing, very popular with schools and families with children.
The visit is on foot, along dirt and stone paths, and requires a willingness to walk.
