About Centro Histórico da Rua 18 de Julho

The historic center of Luiz Alves is on Rua 18 de Julho, downtown, and brings together mansions built by the families who settled the region. It is a short walk to see up close the architecture of the early 20th century in the Vale do Itajaí countryside.

Settlement of Luiz Alves began in 1877, led by the engineer Júlio Grothe, with German, Italian and Portuguese-Brazilian immigrants. The municipality was created in 1958, when it split from Itajaí.

Among the best-known buildings are the Tiedt Family House, from 1902, a two-story exposed-brick house with arched openings, the Wust Family House, from 1920, the old town hall building, from 1927, and the Schwanke Family House, from 1940. Together they show how the immigrant families who built the municipality lived and built.

You visit from the street, looking at the facades. Some of the buildings may be privately used, so admire and photograph them from the sidewalk. The walk goes well with the Rota da Cachaça, which leads to the stills scattered around the municipality.
