Casarão Belga

The former town administration building, a neoclassical structure with curved parapets and arched porches, was where the municipality was formally established in 1958. Restored, it now houses a cultural space with exhibits on Belgian settlement in the Vale do Itajaí.

About Casarão Belga

The Casarão Belga ("Belgian mansion") is the building of the former town administration and first town hall of Ilhota, in the town center. It is where the municipality was formally established in 1958, when Ilhota split from Itajaí. In 2022, the town listed the building as a municipal cultural heritage site.

The name recalls the town's origins. In the 1840s, Belgian families arrived in the Vale do Itajaí in a settlement project led by Charles Van Lede and founded a colony in the Ilhota area. Little remains from that time, and the mansion has become one of the symbols of that memory.

The facade stands out for its curved parapets, its neoclassical-inspired decorative elements and its symmetrically arranged arched porch. It is worth looking at the details up close and photographing the whole building from the sidewalk.

The building is used by the town as a cultural space and has hosted exhibits on Belgian immigration, such as the show "A Colônia Belga e seus Descendentes no Vale do Itajaí" in 2022. The visit is quick and goes well with Praça Charles Van Lede and the Igreja Matriz São Pio X, a few steps away.
