About Piscinas naturais de Tamandaré
The natural pools of Tamandaré are shallow, warm pools that appear among the reefs off the beach in the town center, on the south coast of Pernambuco. A reef barrier runs parallel to the coast and breaks the force of the waves, which keeps the sea calm at the water's edge.
At low tide, the reefs are exposed and form the pools. The clear water lets you see small fish and marine life without diving deep. The jangada operators and boatmen on the beach take visitors there on a short ride.
The stretch is part of the Costa dos Corais Environmental Protection Area, a federal conservation area created in 1997 to protect reefs, mangroves and the West Indian manatee. That is why you must not step on the corals or feed the fish.
It is a relaxed trip, good for families with children and for those who are not strong swimmers, since the water is shallow. Getting on and off the jangada takes some balance. Tamandaré is also home to Praia dos Carneiros, which lies farther north and has its own tours.
