About Praia de Tatuamunha

Praia de Tatuamunha (beach) is the first beach in Porto de Pedras if you are coming from São Miguel dos Milagres, on the border between the two municipalities. It is part of the Rota Ecológica dos Milagres (Ecological Route), on the north coast of Alagoas, within the Costa dos Corais protected area.

The setting is light sand, lots of coconut palms and a calm sea, protected by the reefs. At low tide, natural pools form along the shore, good for a relaxed swim and for watching fish. One stretch of the waterfront has pousadas (guesthouses) among the coconut palms; another continues almost without buildings.

Nearby, the Tatuamunha River meets the sea. It is on this river that the Santuário do Peixe-Boi (manatee sanctuary) operates, a separate trip made with a guide from the local association. Many people visit the sanctuary and then stay at the beach.

Facilities are simple, with few businesses. It is a beach for those seeking peace and quiet, a swim in shallow water and a late afternoon by the river. The calm sea appeals to families with children.

Practical information

How much time to set aside

Half a day is enough; a full day if you combine it with the Santuário do Peixe-Boi (manatee sanctuary) trip.

Best time

From September to March, when it rains less, and always at low tide to enjoy the natural pools; in the late afternoon, the river mouth is a good spot to watch the sunset.

How to get there

It is in Porto de Pedras, on the border with São Miguel dos Milagres, along the AL-101 Norte highway. From Maceió, head north on the AL-101; from Maragogi, head south. Access to the sand is through the village of Tatuamunha.

Tip

Check the tide table before you go: the natural pools only appear at low tide. Bring water and snacks, because there is little for sale on the beach.
